Malakula, Vanuatu - 20,000 acre Reforestation Project
ECO2 Forests Inc's 20,000 acre reforestation project is located on the South Pacific island of Malakula, Vanuatu.
ECO2 Forests believe it is important that all our projects deliver environmental and economical benefits as well as considerable benefits in employment, education and infrastructure development in the country which will be felt for decades to come. This project is an ideal example of how the company's E4 Philosophy provides a positive outcome for the local community, some of whom are pictured above.
For the local community, the project will create over 300 jobs for the local tribes, including this local tribe (pictured below) with whom ECO2 staff met on Malakula recently. ECO2 Forests expect this number to increase as the project develops. Importantly, employment is long term and will continue over a number of generations throughout the duration of the project, which will last a minimum of 75 years.
As we build up to the first harvest over the first seven years employment numbers will increase. At this point the forest will have all stages of the growth cycle in operation. The positive effect for employees, their families and the wider community will be felt for decades through the additional cash injection and increased quality of life provided by the project.
Over 3.3 million Kiri Trees will be planted in the project under the company's Global Forestry Plan.
Our Global Forestry Plan module planting matrix allows us to have one module of the forest ready for harvest each season. This ensures we operate at maximum efficiency every season and provide a consistent supply of sustainable lumber to the market and a steady stream of employment.
The fast growth and regenerative capabilities of the Kiri Tree under the Global Forestry Plan will allow the project to realize seven full harvest cycles within the first 50 years.
This is a similar time that it takes many other traditional forestry projects to reach their first harvest.
In fact, the 20,000 acre project may produce the timber yield equivalent of a 140,000 acre forest of traditional forested species, with continual lumber supply after just seven years.
It is estimated that the project will produce 600 million board feet of renewable rough sawn timber and sequestration of approximately 7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere during the first full planting cycle.
